Abraham Peirse, Sr., was born in England about 1600. He married Rebecca
_____whose sister Hannah "Goody" Scudder was the wife of John Scudder of
Barnstable. (NEHGR Vol. 9, page 284). They apparently had six children:
Abraham, Rebecca, Mary, James, Alice and Isaac. Three of Abraham's
children married children of Francis and Isabel Baker, of Yarmouth,
Massachusetts. Francis Baker had lived in St. Albans, Hertfordshire,
England or vicinity, and it is possible Abraham Peirce came from the same
area.
Abraham Peirce was born in England about 1600. It is not known from which
part of England he came. However, it is known that he had a relative,
Thomas Peirce, who lived in Barbadoes, British West Indies, and was
probably the Sir Thomas Peirce who was living there in or before 1658, in
which year he was listed as a taxpayer.
Abraham Peirce probably came to America in the ship Ann which landed at
Plymouth in 1623. Two of his servants, one of whom was a Negro, are
listed as passengers of the Ann, but Abraham Peirce is not listed. As
William Peirce was master of the vessel, Abraham may well have been on
the Ann as a member of the crew and so not listed as passenger. His Negro
servant was probably the first Negro brought to New England by a
colonist.
It is also possible that he came to America on the Little James. The Ann
and Little James both left England about the same time but the Little
James arrived in Plymouth a week or ten days later than the Ann, which
arrived June 1623. It is possible that the Little James stopped at
Barbados, British West Indies where Abraham visited his relative, Thomas
Pierce and sent his two servants ahead of him to Plymouth in the Ann.
Gen. Ebenezer Weaver Peirce, a genealogist who compiled a book on the
descendants of Abraham Peirce, believed that he settled on land in
Plymouth that fell within the limits of Duxbury at its incorporation in
1637, and within the limits of Pembroke when it separated from Duxbury in
1711, and then within the limits of Hanson which was once part of
Pembroke. Gen. Peirce thinks he settled in or near that part of Hanson
known as Bryantville. The Plymouth Colony Court Records show that he
lived west of Indian Head Pond and very close to the present Route 58. In
1633 land was granted in Plymouth to "Mr. Perce's two servants."
Abraham Peirce's descendants have spelled the name variously, but they
are all descended from Abraham Peirce who was the first of this name in
New England. It is PERCE in Middleboro, PEARCE. in Gloucester and PIERCE
in Wellfleet, but they all descended from Abraham PIERCE the first
settler of the name in New England.
