[33974] Obituary

J. H. Shafer, a refugee from Old Mexico, died at the City Hotel in El Campo, Texas, on Dec. 31st, 1916. He was born in South Carolina Jan. 28th, 1857; moved to Georgia when quite young, later marrying Mrs. Lula Avery.
In 1884 they emigrated to Texas, and lived in various places for a number of year. In 1900 moved to Oklahoma stopping first at Granite then Mangum, where they with others formed an organization for colonizing a valley of fine lands in Mexico. Moving ther in March 1903, where they lived as thrifty and worthy citizens until the oppressions by the Mexican soldiers became so severe as to almost cause one to loose faith in humanity. He at once did as many others have done, with far less provocation, tried to drown his troubles with drink. It was in 1913 we were orderd out by the American Government which order was obeyed promptly.
He got permission to return to his home in 1914, to try and save what he could out of the wreck, all that had on earth being there. In 1916 the treatment again becoming almost intolerable by the various hords that it was a sever undertaking to endure the strain and keep (?)... In June another order to vacate, and being held up by the Mexican soldiers and robbed of all personal property and told to hit the road having crossed the border on August the 4th, 1916 and was sent to his stopping place in Hill Co., Texas, where they existed as best they could, until the weather becoming so sever as to cause them to drift south, landing here on Dec. 18th, 1916. When they landed in Texas they were penniless and in debt to the U.S. Government for their transportation out from their homes.
Their condition financially, and otherwise, did not improve. Death and a paupers grave being his apportionment here. He died as he had lived, in one particular, honest to a cent, just to humanity, he bing his only enemy. So let us in all honesty not judge him too harshly for we do not know, having never crossed the (..?..), nor have we been tried (by?) fire as it were.
