[93050] Ancestry goes back to William the Conqueror and Duke of Norfolk.
1854 West Point grad. Fought in 43 Civil War engagements. Lost his right arm in Battle of Fair Oaks1862. He had the bullet that shattered his elbow. He was awarded Medal of Honor. While recuperating in Maine he recruited a whole regiment of
volunteers. Briefly in command of union troops in Gettysburg in July 1863. He commanded Sherman's right wing in the Georgia march in 1864. He was named by Lincoln as Commissioner of Freedmen's Bureau in DC, which he served 1865-1874, while founding
Howard University. He helped found Fisk U and Hampton Inst, Lincoln Memorial U. He was involved with 24 schools for blacks or poor whites. President grant ordered him to the Apache front. He went unarmed with only 4 men into the apache camp. He made
peace with Cochise in 1872, and met Geronimo, whom he gave rides to on the back of his horse, befriending him. Geronimo said many years later that Howard was a good white man. He led the Dept of Columbia, including Northwest and Alaska 1874-1881. He
led the epic sad campaign against the nez perce in 1877, and the Bannock and Piute wars. While living in portland he was incensed by the persecution of the chinese. he befriended the Ling family, who became a prominent merchant. He commanded west point
in 1881-2. He met Chief Joseph (Nez Perce) again in 1904. He wrote many books and articles.
