Raised and educated in England, his role was held for him by the powerful father and son team of the Duke of Albany. Albany was responsible for keeping Scotland English free, putting down a serious rebellion from Lords of the Isles, for founding the
first 3 Scottish Universities at St. Andrews, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, and assisting the French regain their crown against Henry V. Upon his death and that of his son Buchan, James returned with his English wife, and executed Albany's other son, his
father in law, and 2 sons, and confiscated his vast wealth. He summoned the Highland chiefs and arrested 40 of them, condemning some to death. This made him very unpopular in the north. He turned Linlithgow castle into a court jewel. He exiled and
confiscated land of any who rose against him, including the powerful lords of the isles and the strong lowland douglas. He renewed the Auld Alliance with France, sending scottish troops to fight with Joan of Arc and charles VII. He earned his
nickname "Lawgiver" with many new reforms and improvements. He was murdered by atholl, his uncle, stewart, his chamberlain and cousin, and graham. they stabbed him to death in front of the queen, who then captured and tortured them to death in ways
hideous even to the times.
