Robert was the youngest of 10 children and suffered from poor health throughout
his life;Six brothers were lawyers, all but one died young. He attended one
session atTusculum College, Greene Co; admitted to bar at Rutledge, Grainger
Co, TN 1844; Judge of Second Circuit Court; served State Senate; 1878 came to
Chattanooga, practiced law with his son; Active in Presbyterian Church.
High Oaks was between Morristown and Bulls Gap. In 1851 Isaac Barton gave
Robert 130 acres near Cedar Creek; 1857 Robert purchased one acre on the hill
front of the old Barton residence "Barton Springs" and High Oaks was built by
William Murphy Barton who was then living in the Isaac Barton house for
Robert, his brother. Robert served in the Confederate government in VA as head
of the railroad throughout the war.
Maggie and Belle Barton, duaghters of James Barton, lived at "High Oaks" after
the death of their father.
The Civil War was very real and active at "High Oaks". "Private History"
Morristown Sun, Feb 1948 printed diary of Mary Ann McFarland Turley of her
experiences.
