Harmen came to New Amsterdam as an 18- year-old barber-surgeon. In1634 he was at Fort Orange and was appointed leader of a party of 3sent into the Oneida country to try to determine if French influencewas the cause of the decline in the fur trade. He kept a journal, which has been preserved and translated into English (see sources). It is the first written account of life among the Iroquois. In 1645 he was assignedthe same position at Fort Orange. In 1647 he was accused of Sodomywith a black servant, and ran off to hide among the Indians. He wascaptured and returned to Fort Orange, where in late winter (1648) heescaped. While running across the ice on the river he fell throughand was drowned.

-came to New Netherland in 1631 as surgeon of the ship Eendracht, andcontinued in the West India Company's service until 1633, after whichhe resided in New Amsterdam until appointed commissary to FortOrange. He was highly respected, though from all accounts, he appearsto have been of an irascible temper. An instance is mentioned of hishaving attempted, in the excitement of a high quarrel, when bothappear to have been in a violent passion, to throw the directorgeneral out of a boat in which they were sailing on the river; he waswith difficulty prevented from accomplishing his purpose. He came toa violent death, I believe, in 1647 or 1648, and Carl Van Bruggesucceeded him as commissaris at Fort Orange. [O'Callaghan's Hist. NewNetherland.]
