excerpts from article "A Day in the Garden of the Pacific"
we left san francisco on november 12th at one oclock. in one hour we had passed through the golden gate, in a few hours we had lost sight of sutro point. our little world was the ship "rio." for 3 days we were seasick, but then had smooth sailing,
especially enjoying the white moonlight of the torrid zone. our eyes were rested for 7 days, and prepared for a great feast of tropical beauty awaiting us at Honolulu where we landed at 3 oclock november 19th. we passed a number of islands and about
noon sighted diamond head, and extinct volcano, passed it and came into sight of honolulu. the crescent beach is a panorama of the rarest beauty. Diving children came out to retrieve coins tossed overboard by the passengers. We were invited by Rev.
Frank Damon and his wife, baptist missionaries, to their mission. The cupola on the school building had a fine view of the city. there was a tram car pulled by 2 mules driven by a native, that we took to a park. then we went to wakiki beach for a
moonlight walk and bathing. early the next morning 9 of us took lunch and started for teh top of punch bowl mt. we had a race to the summit, from where we had an excellent view of the city. we ate lunch in the crater. then we went to the bishop
memorial museum that had relics of the barbarous age of the south pacific. the hawaiian people are rejoiced at the election of mr. mckinley, hoping that hawaii will be annexed in his term. then we took a bicycle ride in the country, along banana, rice
and taro fields. chinamen do the drudgery work. bananas could be bought at .15 a bunch. we heard a native band play, which was very loud and harsh, delighting themselves more in quantity than quality of sound. we visited the YMCA but returned to the
ship to fight off the mosquitoes. we left at midnight for our 14 day voyage to Yokahama Japan.
