Isobel: Was a doctor in Shunte-fu, China, She came back to Grove City College to be the doctor. She died in a nursing home.
she taught school at age 17 for 3 years then went to Aspen CO for 2 years where salaries were double- $60 a month. She took her first year of medical school in Denver CO, but went to Philadelphia for better clinics.
Education 1: 1898, Grove city College grad.
Education 2: 1905, Grad of Women's Medical College in Philadelphia, PA
worked for a year at jewish maternity hospital in philadelphia
went to china 1906 with Presbyterian board of foreign missions under brother charles, who had been in charge of a hospital at paoting since 1896
Bet. 1915 - 1927, Superintendant of Grace Talcott Memorial Hosp., Shuntefu, North China, donated by wealthy parents of a friend of hers. she ran it single handed, with one chinese nurse and a handful of young untrained chinese girls, and 100 patients
a day was not unusual. she left when US govt reported it dangerous, could no longer protect nationals.

She was a member ama and received an award from them for 50 yrs service in 1955
was honored by state in 1967 by governor recoginizing outstanding women physicians.
from article on her 80th bday: "i spent 5 years studying the language-pekingese was the one we used- and i got so i could speak and read fairly well. i studied under my brother charles at paotingfu. it would take days to tell about my experiences in
china. I did all types of surgery." she had no assistant in surgery, and she had to constantly watch the chinese girl using chloroform to tell the right amount was being administered. she would make trips into remote country areas in 2 wheeled
springless carts to hold clinics. word would spread in advance and she would find 100s of patients waiting. she regretted her modern equipment at her hospital falling into communist hands. "father used to tell us (3 younger girls) to look for good
husbands to make us happy, but we told him that hisotry sometimes proved otherwise and we were happy the way it was." she brought home beautiful chinese art, including vases, embroidery, carvings, pictures, and rugs. she is very fond of chinese food
and visits china town in nycity, insisting on using chopsticks. she constantly praises the careers of her 2 brothers charles and stephen.
from article in 1942: "american medical missionaries are not wanted in japanese-occupied china today. Japan has a policy of bombing and buring hospitals, missions, schools, and colleges, especially american interests, in China. if Japan wins this war,
all foreign properties will be siezed." in 1919-20 and 27 the yellow river overflowed and inundated farmlands and villages for miles. She had to feed 500 refugees a day, and inoculate them against various diseases and find housing for them. in 1913
she was sent to Hainan island (now held by japan) and stamped out a smallpox epidemic over 6months. she then went via the mediterranean and red sea and atlantic to america for a year. while home she did post graduate work at school of medicine in NY.
she returned for study in america again in 1920, this time by way of the pacific, stopping in japan for a month. she returned in 1927, and has fond memories of china, but no desire to return.
