[92744] JACKSON, ABRAHAM-Abraham Jackson was born probably in England ca.
1623-28, based on his being admitted to the Plymouth Church on 14 March
1708, when he was said to be "upwards of eighty years of age" (Ply. Ch.
Recs. 1:207). Savage stated that he was an apprentice to Nathaniel
Morton. The earliest mention of him in the records was when he married
Remember (or Remembrance) Morton on 18 November 1657 (MD 17:72). That
she was the daughter of court secretary Nathaniel Morton is shown by
Ply. Co. LR 5:231, where on 16 February 1703/04 Abraham and Remember
Jackson sold land to Benjamin Warren that they had received of their
honored father Nathaniel Morton. There is another 1657 record showing
that Jackson had taken the Oath of Fidelity that year and was a resident
of Marshfield (PCR 8:178). In 1661 the guns and swords of Plymouth were
disposed of, including a short gun and a sword given to Nathaniel Morton
for the use of Abraham Jackson (PTR 1:44). There were other Jacksons in
early Plymouth, such as Samuel of Scituate and Thomas, but there is no
indication of any relationship with Abraham. Abraham was admitted a
freeman on 1 June 1658 (PCR 3:136). On 7 May 1662 the court heard his
complaint that Rose, wife of Thomas Morton, had called him a lying rascal
and rogue, and she confessed her fault and promised to be more careful of
her words (PCR 4:11). On 3 June 1662 he became a constable of Plymouth
(PCR 4:14). He frequently served on juries, and sometimes was a surveyor
of the highways for Plymouth (PCR, PTR, passim).
In 1665 he was ordered to pay eight shillings to William Nelson to end a
controversy about the keeping of two sheep (PCR 4:105). One of his
occupations was producing and selling tar, and in 1665 he was fined 5
pounds for ruining several barrels of tar by putting dirt in them (PCR
4:111). On 6 March 1665/66 the court allowed Giles Rickard, Jr. ten
shillings from Abraham Jackson concerning a controversy between them over
a parcel of tar, and on 1 May 1666 the court heard a complaint by Jackson
that Nathaniel Warren detained a barrel of tar delivered by Jackson for
town use (PCR 4:117, 120). On 1 June 1669 he petitioned the court to
remit his forfeiture of three barrels of tar to the government for
breaching a law prohibiting the making of tar, and the court, referring
to his poor condition and many losses, ordered that he should have seven
bushels of corn paid for by the treasurer (PCR 5:21). He obtained
various grants of land in the Plymouth area (PTR 1: 45, 48, 53, 61, 94,
127), and he bought and sold land on a number of occasions (PTR, PCR,
passim). He lived near the north side of Town Brook, as is shown by a
deed of 1689 whereby John Cole sold land there to William Shurtleff
excepting a parcel forty by ftfty feet which was the house and land of
Abraham Jackson (MD 32:36). His wife Remember died on 24 July 1707 in
her seventieth year (Ply. Ch. Recs. 1:205), and Abraham died on 4
October 1714 (MD 16:84). He left descendants living in Plymouth, and
Lydia Jackson, a nineteenth century descendant, became the second wife of
Ralph Waldo Emerson, the marriage taking place in the house which now
serves as the headquarters of the General Society of Mayflower
Descendants in Plymouth.
