His name was going to be Robert Otis Bell Jr., after his daddy but the doctor didn't spell it out, hence R. O.

The Navy wouldn't accept initials for a name so hehad to spell his name R period O period.

This interview was taken in the mid to late 70's. The interviewer isPam Jennings Roberts. The interviewee is R. O. Bell Jr., her grandfather.

Papa, do you remember you grandparents names?

R.O.
Which side?

Pam
Either. Both sides. Just tell me which one is which.

R.O.
Well, on mother's side I don't. I don't know a thing about them. They died before I was born.On daddy's side his mothers name was Mollie, that's all I know. Grandpa wasBill.

Pam
Do you remember your great-grandparents? Or were they alive then?

R.O.
Uh-uh, noooo, uh-uh. I don't remember them. See, they died when I's just young.

Pam
Tell me about your brothers and sisters. I know......

R.O.
I ain't got no brothers and sisters. I got two sister, one of them Cleo, 10 year older than me and Zephra was 8 year older. Zephra died when she...about 23, 24 year old, when she had her baby. About 26, 27 she died. She had 3children.

Pam
Do you know what their names were?

R.O.
Off hand no. I know some of um. Bills one of um over here. Of course he's adopted. They was all adopted. Mother and daddy kept them and his daddy kept for a while then he come and got all the children and took them back to Dallas. The next thing weknew they was all adopted out to 3 different families.

Pam
After Zephra died.

R.O.
Oh yah! Year or two after she died. Finally, Milborn now, the oldest boy, he membered us. He come back and brought his parents that adopted him back to up there to Sherman to see momma and daddy. We knew him and kept upwith him until he went to the service and he got killed in the service. His wife had a little boy they name him Milborn Jr. and she brought him several times to see momma and daddy. She married again and we don't know where she's at now. The little girl, her name is Pat Ward now, she lives in California, her name was Leola Huffman what her name use to be before she was adopted out. I'veseen her, they came back from California last year. We met over here at Bills,Bill Weekly, is a young boy that adopted out that's his name now. I can't remember his little name before he was...he's a little-bitty fellow when he was adopted out but he lives over here now close to San Antonio. He did live over here near Portland we visit a lot. He stay over night here about 2 months ago here with me.

How many kids does Aunt Lottie have?

R.O.
She's got two,twin girls, just two girls.

Pam
What's their names?

R.O.
Billy and Betty.

Pam
Do you know how many kids they have, or do you have any idea?

R.O.
Well, Billy has got 2 boys, Betty, her husband is in the service and theirin Germany, now, and I think she's got all together 6 children, I'm not positive. I think there's 6 of um. The oldest girl lived down here in Virginia. She's got 2 little children. And the rest of um...the oldest boy's in the service. He's in the Navy now, don't know where...Lottie don't know exactly where he's at right now, but then the other children all in Germany with their mother and daddy which will be over there another 18 months.

That right there would be 3 greats to Granny Bell wouldn't it. (Actually it is 2 greats.) What about Aunt Cleo?

Aunt Cleo's got 2 girls. One of um lives over here atTylor and the other live up there at Phoenix with

R.O. and Osha met in Sherman Tx. R.O. and a friend had a b
lind date with Osha and a friend and were tomeet and Osha'
s house. Her house had two front doors, one to the livin
g room and one to her bedroom. As R.O and his friend walke
d up on the front porch, the door to Osha bedroom was ope
n and she and girlfriend were getting ready and R.O. saw Os
ha through the door. He turned to his friend and said "Tha
t's the woman I'm going to marry. You take the other one.
" And that's what happened.

ple are at home in Sherman.
