OBIT: HARRY LEWIS, 96, LIFELONG DISTRICT RESIDENT, IS DEAD
Harry Lewis, one of Jefferson County's oldest residents and a lifetime
resident of the Punxsutawney district, died here Sunday at the age of 96
years.
Mr. Lewis succumbed to the infirmities of age in the Blose Rest Home on
West Mahoning St., where he had resided the past four years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the
Morrison-Schenkemeyer Funeral Home here, where friends are being received.
The Rev. Dr. H. C. Humke, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate
and internment will be in Perry Cemetery.
Mr. Lewis a successful district farmer for more than three quarters of a
century, was born in Perry Township, Jefferson County, March 30, 1859 , a son
of John H. and Isabelle Diltz Lewis. He was married Dec. 1, 1881, to Maggie
Jane Freas, who died 47 years ago. Mr. Lewis was a member of the
Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one son, King B. Lewis, of this city; three daughters,
Mrs. Preston Campbell and Mrs. Fred C. Haag, of Punxsutawney, and Miss Isabel
M. Lewis, of Mt. Lebanon; two sisters, Miss Nora Lewis, and Dr. Elizabeth
Lewis of Grove City, 20 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Taken from Jefferson County, Pennsylvania - "Her Pioneers and People", Vol. II, by Dr. William James McKnight, published in 1917 by J.H. Beers & Company,
Chicago, page 473:
HARRY LEWIS, who is one of the representative exponents of agricultural industry in Young township, has been a resident of Jefferson county from the time of his birth, belonging to one of the well known and honored families of this favored section of
the Keystone State. His is a sterling Welsh family that was founded in Pennsylvania in the latter part of the eighteenth century.
Harry Lewis was born March 30, 1859, on the old homestead on which his
venerable parents still reside, in Perry township, this county. He acquired
his early education in the public schools and continued to be associated in
the work and management of his fathers farm until he had attained to the age
of twenty-four years, when he married and with his young bride established
his home on his present farm, in Young township. After two years he returned
to Perry township, where he carried on farming operations until the death of his wife, in 1909. Thereafter he passed one year on the old homestead farm of his father, and at the expiration of this period he purchased the old Theophilus Pantall farm, of
two hundred acres, in Young township, where he has since continued his successful activities in diversified agriculture and the raising of good types of livestock. His farm is one of the fine landed estates of the county, equipped
with good buildings and other permanent improvements of the best order.
The loved and devoted wife of Mr. Lewis passed away in 1909, as previously
noted. Her maiden name was Maggie Freas, and she was a daughter of Josiah B.
Freas, a well known citizen of this county. Mrs. Lewis is survived by four
children, Bessie, King B., Olive and Isabella, all of whom remain at the
paternal home except Olive, who is the wife of Preston C. Campbell, of
Punxsutawney
Mr. Lewis accords unwavering allegiance to the Republican party, is deeply
interested in all that touches the communal welfare, and is now serving as
supervisor of Young township. While still a resident of Perry township he
served ten years as its supervisor, and for eight years was a member of the
school board of his district. He is an appreciative and valued member of the
ancestral church, the Perry Presbyterian Church, and takes deep interest in
its work.
