[92555] "Jamie" named after Col James Taylor of Astoria
He learned navigating from his brother John, had his pilot papers at 21, took sternwheelers over the notorious Columbia River bar.
first licensed pilot in Portland Harbor, designed and built 7 or 8 shallow draft sternwheel steamboats, piloted 19 years on Yukon and tributaries during Gold rush. One of his designs, the Alice, drew only 8 inches, allowing him to get out earlier than
anyone else at the spring thaw. Captain Riggs of of Sat Evening Post fame said he was the finest river navigator he knew. One of his ships, the Lurline, had a 52 year career in Portland.
He rescued Caroline in 1880 from a dock below Astoria during a rising storm- his prow having sank below the dock and ripped it off with Carolyn standing on it.
He was 5'10", 175 lbs., strong, gracious, courtly, handsome. He first lived with Grace in Portland, but moved to a pioneer farm on the Williamette. They built their elegant 7 bedroom home in 1909-10 at a cost of $10000. It was called a mansion in its
day. So Pacific RR built a branch line across the southern part of their land. They grew fruit, berries, holly, vegetables, grapes. they had a barn, a large chicken house, and the old pioneer house became the applehouse. He made large charts tracking
the Yukon, and many drawings. He took photos on glass and film, kept all his boat plans and letters. They were assessed at $10000 in 1966. He was in charge of all shipping below Dawson in 1901- 60 barges and 57 steamers. He was deeply concerned about
forest conservation. He was self educated with an extensive library. he would read to Grace for hours in the evening. He built model boats for his grandchildren.
