[92147] Family tradition says "he was the first Lewis in America. He came to Maine in 1620."
Circumstantial evidence: He was welsh, Evan is listed as welsh, and age of family remark on old tree by bob lewis (recorded approx. 1939).

he had no sons listed in will to pass on name, common lewis name makes this problematic. Elizabeth and Judith are the only two children named in his will.
family name, date, and place just a coincidence?

Found Thomas Lewis who emigrated 1628 to Saco ME
He ran The Saxtry, a tavern and inn. From Shrewsbury, Shropshire Eng. apprenticed as a draper. Minister.

granted to Thomas Lewis and Richard Bonython "all that part of the mainland in New England in America aforesaid, commonly called or known by the name of Swanckadocke, ... lying & being between the cape or bay commonly called Cape Elizabeth & the cape
or bay commonly called Cape Porpus" seized 1631

Commissioner at Saco, 25 March 1636

Walter Goodwin Davis treated the family and estate of Mr. Thomas Lewis of Saco in The Ancestry of Charity Haley, 1755-1800 in 1916. His work included sketches of the boundaries of the patent at Saco and several generations of descendants from Thomas's
daughter Judith. This summary of the family did predated the discovery by Davis of the Lewis English origin at St. Chad's, published in 1947 [NEHGR 101:3-23]. In 1956 Davis compiled a longer account of the Lewis family, incorporating his findings of
1947 [Nicholas Davis Anc 105-25].

Thomas of Shrewsbury, vintner, sailed on the Swift (70 tons- Stephen Reekes, Master) from Bristol in April. He came with wife Elizabeth, children Thomas, mary, judith, and elizabeth to saco me. The other family they traveled with, the Cleeves,
settled at casco bay.

LEWIS, Thomas, Gent., patent, 1629, of land between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Porpoise. His name associated with "old planters," Blaxton, Jeffreys, Hilton, and with Bonython. In the patent dated 12 February, 1629-30, with R. Bonython he says he had
"already been at the charge to transport himself and others to Take a view of New England." (Banks.) Oath of allegiance November, 1652. His dau. Mary mar. Rev. Richard Gibson about 1638, an Episcopalian. Mary was a troublesome person. Gibson wrote to
Winthrop in 1638: "She so behaved her self in the shipp which brought her from England hither some two years agoe that the block was reaved at the Mayne yard to have duckt her."

On 28 March 1636 "Mr. Thomas Luis" sued Mr. Thomas Williams for "words of defamation", but a full jury not being present, it was continued to next court. Capt. Richard "Bonithon" and "Mr. Thomas Luis" sued Mrs. Joane Vines "concerning the planting of
corn on the Island where she planted formerly ... it is ordered for the preservation of the public peace ... that Mrs. Joane Vines shall peaceably plant what she hath formerly planted and what more she can plant. Also Capt. Richard Bonithon & Mr.
Thomas Luis to plant what they can except where Mrs. Vines planteth" and further trial of the title to be postponed [MPCR 1:2-3]. To settle the matter, in a public-spirited gesture at court 4 April 1637, it was agreed bewteen Capt. Richard Bonython,
Richard Vines, and Thomas Lewis, gent., that Vines would pay for the corn planted by paying for a "pair of stocks and a lock to them" [MPCR 1:6].
On 7 February 1636/7 is was ordered "that Mr. Tho. Lewis shall appear the next court day at the now dwelling house of Thomas Williams, there to answer his contempt, and to show cause why he will not deliver up the combination belonging to us" [MPCR
1:5]. The final result of this case is not recorded. In the same court, he was ordered to pay John Richmond 6 10s. for two barrels of beef [MPCR 1:5].
By affidavits from Clement Greenway, Francis Robinson and Thomas Wise, it appeared that on 5 July 1635, "Mr. Tho. Lewis" hired Greenway's servant Peter Hogg to caulk and trim a boat. But the boat leaked and Lewis won a 4 judgment from Greenway at
court on 4 April 1637 [MPCR 1:7].
Mr. Richard Gibson, minister, sued Mr. Thomas Lewis for debt at court on 7 May 1637 [MPCR 1:7]. The court records end abruptly at this court, during a two year suspension instigated by Sir Ferdinando Gorges, who was awaiting his charter. When the
court records resumed, Mr. Thomas Lewis was not to be found.
The reply of John Winthrop to Rev. Richard Gibson complaint regarding the "infamy" cast upon Gibson's new wife, though not of record, must have encouraged Gibson, for he and his wife brought the matter to Saco court on 8 September 1640 against John
Bonython, gentleman, and won 6 6s. 8d. damages [MPCR 1:68-69]. In this case, Gibson claimed that the slander took place "the 28th day of April, 1640 in the dwelling house of Thomas Lewes deceased," further narrowing the probable date of Lewis's death.
It is possible that Lewis was still alive at the marriage of his daughter Mary in late 1638, since Gibson tells us plainly that the marriage was to settle differences, presumably political differences held between Gibson and Lewis and not between
Gibson and the widow Lewis. The effort was in vain, however, for Lewis died and Gibson set sail for England after very few years.

Shrewsbury was settled originally because there was an area of land within a huge natural loop in the River Severn that could be defended easily.

The Roman road, Watling Street, ran through the area and the 14th Roman Legion had their headquarters here and there are many Roman remains to be found
The original town charter is dated 901, and the town's name then was "Scobbesbyrig".
Shrewsbury also is in the Domesday Book of 1086 with a descripion of the town at that date
During the Middle Ages the town grew wealthy by trading cloth and wool from Wales, but the proximity to Wales also meant that town walls had to be erected in 1220 to protect it from Welsh attack
By the 18th century it was an important coaching town on the way from London to Holyhead (Dublin being the second city of the Empire)
Later, in Victorian times the railway superseeded coaches, and the town adapted to a new position as a stop on the journey north by train
Today Shrewsbury is a quiet market town with beautiful, well preserved "black and white" tudor buildings
Places to see in Shrewsbury today

the black and white buildings in Grope Lane, Butcher Row, Frankwell
Georgian buildings like the town's library, art gallery and museum all within the famous public school
circular St Chad's Church, dating from 17th century
the Quarry, once the source of local stone, now gardens created by Percy Thrower
Shrewsbury Castle, restored by Thomas Telford in 1788
Rowley's House Museum, 16th century building housing Roman remains
St Mary's Church from the 12th century with fine medieval carving and stained glass
St Chad's Church, a circular building designed in 1792, is one of the few round churches in Britain
Charles Darwin's statue (he was born here in 1809) stands in front of the school
Ditherington Flax Mill, the worlds first iron-framed building - forebear of the skyscraper
