[94703] He was a representative for Suffolk Co. in the Colonial Legislature in1691, 1692, and from 1694 to 1706 inclusive. April 17, 1701, he washonored with an expulsion from that body by the Governor, forpresenting a paper considered "disloyal to his Majesty, anddisaffected to his government," a paper, however, which we should nowregard simply as breathing only the sentiments of a larger libertythan that vouchsafed to the colonists at that day. Col. Henry Pierson, also a member of the same Assembly, and three others were rebuked forsigning it, among who was Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, then the head of thedistinguished family of that name in Albany. Col. Howell was, to thecredit of his constitutents, promptly re-elected, and sent back to thesame Assembly, and remained throughout all his term of office an abledefender of the rights of the colonists. After his death at Newtown onhis way home, his body was taken to Southampton and buried in theSouthend burying-ground, where a massive tombstone, remaining to thisday, and bearing the family arms, marks his last earthlyresting-place. (History of Southampton)

Matthew was a man of prominence in his town and took part in all civicaffairs. On his tombstone is inscribed: "One of the House ofRepresentatives for Her Majesty's Province of New York." (Descendantsof Edward Howell...)

He died at Newtown, Long Island [NY] while enroute home on Saturday 4May 1706 (SHTR 2:283). (Descendants of Edward Howell...2nd)
