Simon was bornin Rockingham Co., VA, the 3rd child of Philip Ermentraudt and wife Mary M Flook. He was bapt in St. Phillips Ch., 18 April 1811 and his parents were his sponsors. (Bapt. Rec., St. Phillips Ch. [unpublished]) He was a small boy when his parents moved from VA to Knox Co., Ohio. Here he grew up on the family farmand in 1833 he was mar. to Rachel Phillips in Knox Co. (Knox Co., Ohio Mar Rec.) Simon was a farmer all of his life. He was prosperous and his real estateholdings increased in value as the years passed. In 1850 his farm was valued at $2000 and in 1860 his holdings had increased to $5,425 and in 1870 to $8,000(US Census, Knox Co., Ohio - 1850, 1860 & 1870). He also had personal property in 1860 valued at $651 and in 1870 at $1,441. When advanced years forced himto quit hard work, he sold his farm and retired. He and Rachel moved to Mt. Vernon, Ohio and lived with their dau., Sarah Chapman. Here Rachel died and wasburied in the cem. at N Liberty, Ohio. After his wife's death, Simon went tolive with his son, George W., in Shelbyville, MO, where he died a few days short of 90 years of age, having enjoyed good health all of his life. His son tookhis body back to Ohio and he was also buried at N. Liberty with his wife. Simon was a Democrat and a member of the Methodist Church. (Several letters, Mary Barker, gr. Niece, Jordonton, TX & Myrtle A. Douglas, gr. Dau, Mullinville, KS 12 Sep 1958.) Rachel was a invalid the last few years of her life. She was a good woman and mother who have never had the opportunities of an education. When her children were nearly all grown and gone and she was past 50 years of ageshe learned to read and write.
