JOHN2 HOWELL (WILLIAM HOWELL OF1 VIRGINIA) was born 1755 in Virginia, and died between 1806 - 1810 in Laurens District, South Carolina. He married MARY POLLY WILSON about 1782 in South Carolina. She was born between 1750 - 1760 in South Carolina, and died between 1850 - 1860 in Oaklevel, Cleburne County, Alabama. OHN HOWELL:According to the book THE fAMILY OF GOODIN DEATON (1814-1902) CLARK COUNTY, ARKANSAS by Bobbie Jones McLane, a noted genealogist and Deaton/Howell historian, John Howell and his family resided along the Reedy River in the western part of Laurens District, South Carolina from some time around the year 1765 until after 1830. (Bobbie Jones McLane, Hot Springs, Arkansas; [email protected])
The census for 1790 in South Carolina, Laurens District, page 433, shows John Howell as the head of a family in Laurens District, South Carolina. William Howell is listed as the head of household on a farm that was located less than half a mile from John's. This was probably John's brother.
The 1800 Census for South Carolina, Laurens District, page 40B, also lists John Howell as the head of a household. There is 1 male over 45 years of age (John); 1 male 10-16 years of age (Elijah); 3 males 1-10 years of age (John, Abraham, Elias); 1 female 26-45 years of age (wife Mary Polly); 1 female 10-16 years of age (Elizabeth); 2 females 1-10 years of age (Temperance, Rebecca) .
It is believed that John died at his farm in Laurens District between 1806 and 1810. John's sons Elijah, Elias, and John and widow Mary (Polly) Howell, heirs of John Howell, deceased, entered into a deed dated December 31, 1822 selling the Howell homestead and farm located on Walnut Creek in Laurens District, South Carolina to William Gaides. The deed is recorded in Deed Record Book "L" at page 168 in the county courthouse in Laurens, South Carolina.

This passage about Elias comes from a book written by George W. Howell in 1963 entitled "THE HOWELLS OF ATHENS IN MONROE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI 1635 THROUGH 1899":
"Elias Howell, ..... child of John Howell and Mary Polly Howell was married to a girl whose first name was Mary in Laurens District, South Carolina. The records indicate that Elias and his wife had only three children: at least one of whom died as a child. Elias is listed as the head of a household in Laurens District, South Carolina in the U.S. Census records for the years of 1820 and 1830. He was the last Howell to leave Laurens District. In 1840 he had joined his relatives in Benton County (now Calhoun and Cleburne County) in Alabama. In the year of 1850 the U.S. Census shows Mary Polly Howell as living in the home with Elias in Calhoun County, Alabama. This census record states that she was 100 years old in 1850 and that she was born in South Carolina. Other census records, however, indicate that she was around 90 years old in 1850. Mary Polly Howell died at some time between 1850 and 1860; and, she is probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Howell Cemetery that is located near Oaklevel in Cleburne County, Alabama.
Elias married his second wife, Caroline Hart, on June 17, 1855. He died November 1, 1858 and his will was probated on the 15th of November."
Another researcher, Tamara McLemore Maddan ([email protected]) indicates that her research shows that Elias Howell first married Mary Yager in 1820 in Laurens County, South Carolina. He then married Mary Partin on May 3, 1825 in Crawford County, Georgia. They had 4 children: Elizabeth, Emeline, Alfred and Green. Elias then married his 3rd wife Caroline Hart on June 17, 1855.
Caroline Hart is listed as the widow of Elias Howell in his will. Caroline (Hart) Howell is also listed as head of household in the 1860 Alabama Census for Calhoun County. Her mother is living with her.

ELIJAH3 HOWELL, SR. (JOHN2, WILLIAM HOWELL OF1 VIRGINIA) was born 1786 in Laurens District, South Carolina, and died April 24, 1857 in Fayette County, (now Lamar County) Alabama. LIJAH HOWELL, SR.:Elijah Howell is on the 1810 Census for South Carolina in Laurens District. He is shown as head of household. Both he and his wife were listed as more than 16 but less than 26 years of age in that census. They were shown with 2 children, a boy and a girl, both less than 5 years old.
In her book THE FAMILY OF GOODIN DEATON (1814-1902) CLARK COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Howell descendant Bobbie Jones McLane stated that Elijah and his family moved to Georgia between the census years 1810 and 1820. She believes they went to Gwinnett County where Elijah's brother John Howell also moved. (Bobbie Jones McLane, Hot Springs, Arkansas; [email protected]).
According to the AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILSON PARKS HOWELL written in 1901, John Wesley Howell (brother of Elijah) moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia in 1825. The author, Wilson Parks Howell, was the son of John Wesley Howell.
Elijah's daughter Rebecca was born in South Carolina in 1813 according to the 1850 and 1860 census records for her. Elijah's daughter Rhoda was born in South Carolina in 1818 according to the 1850 and 1880 census records for her and born in Alabama according to the 1860 census record for her. His daughter Mary was born in Alabama in 1819 according to the 1860 and 1880 census records for her. Therefore it's possible that Elijah and his family may have gone to Georgia around 1814 for a few years and then returned to South Carolina by the time of Rhoda's birth in 1818. He then must have settled into Alabama by 1819 when daughter Mary was born.
Bobbie Jones McLane also states in her book that Elijah eventually settled in that part of Fayette County which later became Lamar County, Alabama. It is believed that Elijah was a Baptist minister connected with the Turkey Creek Church and Little River Church in South Carolina
One land record for Alabama shows that Elijah Howell of Fayette County purchased 40 acres of land in Tuscaloosa on September 20, 1839. (Certificate No. 18026).
McLane indicates that family bible records show the children of Elijah to be John, West (Wesley?), Mary, Rhoda, Rebecca and Frances. These were most likely children from his first wife whose name is unknown. The final accounting of Elijah's will in 1859 listed children Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rhoda, Eliza, Sarah, Elijah, Tillman, Newton, E.A., Elias, John and Mary.
Elijah is on the 1850 Census for Alabama in Fayette County, 15th Division, pg. 66a. He is the head of household #159. He is shown as age 60 (but he was probably older than this) and born in South Carolina. He is living with his 2nd wife Nancy shown as age 44 and born in South Carolina. Elijah and Nancy had 5 children who are listed with them. They are Elijah, Elias, Newton, Elisa (Eliza), and Sarah. All children are shown as born in Alabama. The household next to Elijah is that of his daughter Elizabeth (from his 1st marriage) and her husband Nicholas Baker and their 9 children.
The 1850 census for Fayette County, 15th Division, also has the households listed for 2 other married daughters of Elijah. They are Rebecca (married to Wm. J. Caraway) and Rhoda (Rody) (married to George Traweek or Trawick).

NKNOWN:The name of Elijah's first wife is unknown. Some researchers believe her first name may have been Sarah. No proof of this has been shown. The possibility exists that her last name may have been Andrews/Anders and that she was an older sister or cousin of Nancy Andrews, Elijah's 2nd wife. One of the reasons for thinking Andrews was the last name of the 1st wife is because one of the daughters of Elijah and his 1st wife was Rebecca Howell Caraway. Rebecca named a son Anders/Andrew Howell Caraway.
This first wife of Elijah Howell probably died in Alabama since her last child, Mary Howell, was born in Alabama in 1819.

ANCY ANDREWS:Nancy is on the 1850 Alabama Census for Fayette County with her husband Elijah Howell. See notes for Elijah Howell.
In 1860, Nancy Howell was widowed and on the Alabama Census for Fayette County, Fayette Post Office on page 429, household #567. She was listed as age 53 and born in South Carolina. She was living in the household of Daniel Anders (Andrews), age 57, born in South Carolina, her brother. Also in the home was Mary Anders, age 81 (Nancy and Daniel's widowed mother) born in Virginia, Nancy Maddox, age 16, born in Alabama and Tho. Maddox, age 18, born in Alabama (These two were probably grandchildren of Mary Andrews.).
Household #566 next to them was the family of Roland Anders (Andrews), his wife Matilda (Maddox) and son William. William's wife and 4 small children were also living in the home. Roland and Daniel Andrews and Nancy (Andrews) Howell were siblings and the children of Mary Andrews and her deceased husband Howell Andrews. Another child of theirs was Sarah Andrews Howell. She had married Abraham Howell who was a brother of Elijah Howell, Nancy's deceased husband. Thus 2 sisters married 2 brothers. Mary Andrews and Howell Andrews' known children were Sarah, Roland, Nancy, Daniel, Franklin, William and Mary Andrews.
Although the name of Elijah Howell's first wife is unknown, the possibility exists that she was an Andrews and a cousin or older sister to Elijah's 2nd wife Nancy Andrews. The Howell and Andrews families (Howell Andrews had 3 brothers) of Laurens District, South Carolina were joined by marriage in several ways.

Notes for ELIAS HOWELL:
Elias Howell joined his half sisters Mary Howell Berry and Rhoda Howell Traweek in New Danville, Rusk County, Texas by 1860. He is on the 1860 Texas Census for Rusk County on page 117, household #754/772 living in the household of John Fortuno (Farluns ?), a doctor. Elias is listed as E. Howell, age 27, born in Alabama, occupation farmer. His real estate is valued at $400 and his personal property valued at $500.
Elias is listed on the 1880 Texas Census for Rusk County as head of household. The listing shows "Elias Howel", age 45, born in Alabama, father born in South Carolina and mother born in South Carolina. Also listed with him is "Rodie Traweek", age 62, sister, born in South Carolina, father born in South Carolina and mother born in South Carolina. Elias apparently never married.
Elias was murdered in 1905 at the age of 72. According to the Nacogdoches, Texas newspaper obituaries for 1899-1905, there are articles for November 11, 1905 (Saturday) and November 13, 1905 (Monday) which state that Elias Howell, bachelor hermit, was murdered by Negroes near Henderson, Texas on November 9, 1905. Three of the five Negroes were hanged by a mob on November 12, 1905.

OHN WESLEY HOWELL:According to Wilson Parks Howell, the son of John and Elizabeth Howell, his parents were 1st cousins, their fathers being brothers. John's father was John Howell and Elizabeth's father was William Howell. This information comes from Wilson Parks Howell's book "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILSON PARKS HOWELL AND FAMILY UP TO JANUARY, 1901".
In 1825, John and Elizabeth moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia. In 1835, they moved to Choccolocco Valley in Benton County (now Calhoun County), Alabama. John Howell was a Methodist Preacher who was licensed to preach in 1837. He died in 1854 of Typhoid Fever.

John's father was John Howell and Elizabeth's father was William Howell. This information comes from Wilson Parks Howell's book "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILSON PARKS HOWELL AND FAMILY UP TO JANUARY, 1901".

ILLMAN HOWELL:Tillman/Tilmon/Tilman was a Baptist preacher for many years throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. According to the book "SUDDUTH, DESCENDANTS OF JAMES AND HANNAH" by Maggie Hubbard Sudduth, the minutes of the Concord Baptist Church, in Fayette Co., Alabama show that Tilmon and Mary Howell (first wife) were founding members on June 29, 1839. On December 21, 1839, Bro. Tilmon Howel was called as the pastor. On September 4, 1841, the church received Sis Martha Howell (Tilmon's second wife) by letter. (Maggie Hubbard Sudduth, Tuscaloosa, Alabama).
The book "THE HOWELLS OF ATHENS IN MONROE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI 1635 THROUGH 1899" compiled and written by George W. Howell, Jr. in 1963 had this to say about Tillman and how he got his first name:
"It was the opinion of Dr. George Howell that the Reverend William Howell, who was also born in the year of 1806, was the oldest child of Elijah Howell, Sr. and his first wife. It is probable that Tillman Howell was named for the Reverend George Tillman, who was a somewhat controversial Baptist preacher in Laurens District and Abbeville District in South Carolina from 1793 until around 1805. Elijah Howell, Sr. may have been a member of George Tillman's congregation, and that he exerted a great influence upon Elijah Howell, Sr. and his family."
Tillman went to Itawamba County, Mississippi when he left Alabama. He then went to Arkansas about 1858 and settled into Clark County. Tillman fathered 21 children by his 2 wives. Four of his children married 4 of the children of Goodin Deaton in Clark County, Arkansas. Tillman died at the age of 88 in Clark County.

Notes for JAMES WILLIAM HOWELL:
James served in the Civil War according to his granddaughter Normie Garner Holcombe Lee. Normie remembers hearing her mother Nancy Elizabeth Howell Garner talking about how her father James told her he had been wounded in the war and had kept his arm in cold river water to try and prevent gangrene from setting in. Nancy was 10 when her father died in 1878. James' younger brother, David Smart Howell, also referred to his older brother serving in the Civil War when he was interviewed in 1923. David stated that he went to Texas in 1862 and had this to say :
"Meanwhile the call of the army was coming to me with more force each day. Before I left home in Arkansas several of my young friends and companions had gone. One night I stole out my clothes and was prepared to go with a group of boys who were leaving for the Army. I did not join them however. My older brother had seen service and was at home at that time recovering from wounds he had received in action. He persuaded me not to go to the Army. Instead, as I have stated, I soon left for Texas."

Many members of the Howell family married into the Andrews/Anders families. This census shows William J. Caraway as the head of household and lists his age as 40, born in South Carolina. Rebecca is shown as age 37 and born in South Carolina. The children listed with them are:

The Civil War took a heavy toll on the Caraway family. Rebecca lost her husband William on June 30, 1862. Then she lost her son Thomas in August 1862 and her son William David in December 1862. She was 49 and left with 8 minor children ranging in age from 17 to 3 years old.

ILLIAM JEFFERSON CARAWAY:William J. Caraway served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He was a private in Company A, O'Neal's 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment. His military records state that he was admitted to Chimbarazo Hospital in Richmond, VA. on June 28, 1862 due to Typhoid and that he died on June 30, 1862. There is no indication of where he was buried but most CSA soldiers who died in Richmond during this time were buried in Oakwood Cemetery or Hollywood Cemetery.

Elijah served in the 41st Alabama Infantry, Company H, as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. His two older brothers, William and Thomas, were also in this regiment and died in service a few months after their enlistment in 1862. Elijah Caraway was a 2nd Lt in the 41st Alabama Infantry. According to his military papers on file with the National Archives, Elijah was listed sick and missing in the retreat from Knoxville, Tennessee on December 4, 1863. Elijah's daughter, Lenora Caraway Horne, told her grandson, William Horne, that Elijah hid in the hills during the rest of the war and that she took food to him there.

A next door household on this census, #203, is that of George Traweek's brother Robard Traweek, age 25, born in Alabama. His wife Margaret is shown as age 19, born in South Carolina. Son Stephen is 1 month old, born in Alabama.
Household #106 on this same census is that of George Traweek's father Spencer Traweek. He is living by himself and shown as age 60, born in Ms. or Mo.
Household #82 on this census is that of Baily Traweek, brother of George. Baily is shown as age 21, born in Alabama, and married within the year. His wife Sarah is shown as age 17, born in Alabama.
By 1860, Rhoda had moved to Texas to join her sister Mary Howell Berry and family. The 1860 Texas Census for Rusk County, New Danville, shows Rhoda Trawick living with the John Berry family. Rhoda is shown as age 45, born in Alabama. Also living in the Berry household is a woman named S.F. Trawick, age 30, born in Alabama. It is unclear as to what relationship S.F. Trawick is to Rhoda. This could be a sister in law of Rhoda's. Sarah Traweek, wife of Baily Traweek, would fit the age. Baily was the brother of George Traweek.
It appears that George Traweek stayed in Alabama to fight in the Civil War. He is on the 1860 Alabama Census for Fayette County, Fayette P.O., Middle Division. He is on page 504, household #492. His age is 45, and he is shown as born in Georgia. Also living with him is Daniel Traweek, age 28, Mary Traweek, age 19, and Idelia Traweek, age 1. All are listed as born in Alabama. It appears that Daniel and Mary are probably a married couple and Idelia is their infant daughter.
There is no indication of what happened to Rhoda's son, Newton Traweek. He is not on the census in Texas with Rhoda, nor is he on the census in Alabama with George.
In 1880, Rhoda is living with her half brother, Elias Howell in Rusk County, Texas. Elias is listed as the head of household (he never married) and Rodie Traweek is shown as his sister, age 62, born in South Carolina. No one else is living with them.

EORGE TRAWEEK:George's last name has also been spelled Trawick in some records.
George Traweek apparently sent his wife Rhoda to Texas prior to the Civil War so that she could live with her sister, Mary Howell Berry. George is in Fayette County, Alabama for the 1860 Census but Rhoda is in Rusk County, Texas. There is no indication of what happened to their son Newton Traweek who would be about 20 at that time.
In June 1861, George Traweek was the original Captain when Company I of the 11th Alabama Infantry of the Confederate Army starting taking volunteers. Not long after the recruitment in June, the regiment marched to Virginia and became part of General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. National Archive records show that Captain George Traweek began the unit and then was removed. Stephen E. Bell was elected by the unit to replace Traweek as Captain in January 1862. After Bell's death in the battle at Frazier's Farm, Lemuel Harris was elected to replace him. Captain Harris was killed in action at the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg, Virginia in 1864.
George Traweek should not be confused with G.L. Traweek, age 23, who was also on the muster list for this unit. G.L. Traweek was probably a nephew of George's and is on the 1860 Alabama Census for Fayette County listed as age 21 and living with a Simon Traweek, age19.
George Traweek was apparently removed as Captain from his Confederate Regiment due to misappropriation of government funds sent to him for the use of his men. A court martial proceeding was instituted against him. The results are unknown and further research would be necessary to determine the outcome. Lemuel Harris wrote numerous letters home to different family members from the time of his enlistment in 1861 until his death in battle in 1864. Those letters were transcribed and are part of the "Civil War Letters to Marion County from the William Musgrove & A.M. Aston Papers". In his letters, Harris makes reference to the elections and the removal of George Traweek. In his letter dated January 8, 1862 to W.A. Musgrove, Lemuel Harris stated:
"I sent Brother Edward a coppy (sic) of the proceeding of the General Court Mashal (sic) in George Traweeks case. if you want to see it ask him for it. I want it perserved (sic) until I get back if ever."
In a letter Harris wrote on February 9, 1862 to Mr. Musgrove, he stated:
"I wrote to B. H. Williams some time ago and learned that George Traweek received at the hand of J.C. Robertson three hundred and fifty dollars for the company and A.A. Walden say $160 dollars i Montgomery makeing (sic) in all $560. he made out his act ? against the government for about three hundred dollars for bringing the company here and to my knoweledge (sic) he never spent twenty so in all he swindled us (the company) and the government $800 a nice speck for six month. I hear that he says we are best boys in the world, and he spent all that he made on his boys. Take these facts for what they are worth and I only make these statements that you may be aware of the serpant (sic), and further I suppose he has a whipping laid in store for me, and I can answer all at once. and at his will for if he ever mentions such a thing I will expose him publicly and more, whol (sic) company bear witness except two or three pets so enough of this for the present."

What happened to George Traweek after his removal as Captain of Company I, 11th Alabama Infantry is unknown. One Traweek researcher has indicated that he died on April 1, 1864 in Fayette County, Alabama.

Mary Berry is on the 1860 Texas census with her husband John and children.Mary's age is shown as 41 and her place of birth as Alabama.
Mary Berry shows up in the Rusk County, Texas court records in 1867. Her husband John has died and Mary is requesting guardianship of her minor children Robert, Alexander, Eliza, Emma and Francis. Guardianship was granted. Mary also filed a petition requesting appointment of appraisers to value the community property of herself and John Berry, deceased. Appraisers were appointed. Mary also filed an inventory and appraisement of the community property. See Probate Minutes of Rusk County, Texas 1867 (LDS film #1020939 pg. 49).
Mary Berry is on the 1880 Texas census, for Clay County, pg 20. She is living with her unmarried son Frank, age 19, and her married son Alexander, age 26, and his family. Mary probably died sometime after 1880 in Gregg County, Texas according to descendant Cookie Paulson.

Most of the information on Eliza Howell Guin, her husband Michael Guin and their descendants comes from researcher/descendant Janie Spencer of Arlington, Texas ([email protected]). Janie has done a tremendous amount of research on the Guin line and is writing a book on this family line.
After the marriage of Eliza Howell and Michael Guin in Fayete County, Alabama in 1853, the couple moved to Marion County, Alabama. On August 30, 1856 when Michael's father's estate went into probate, Michael and Eliza were living in Marion County.
The 1860 Census for Alabama, Marion County, Eastern Division, shows Michael as head of household on page 665, household # 345/355. He is listed as "M. Gewin", age 31, born in Alabama. Eliza is listed as age 37, born in Alabama. The children listed with them are Roady (Rhoda), age 5; Sarah, age 4; Adaline, age 2; and Eli, age 1. All children are shown as born in Alabama.
Eliza became a widow after Michael Guin's death in 1864. She was listed as head of household in the 1870 Alabama Census, Fayette County, Township 13, Vernon Post Office, page 372b, household #10. Eliza is shown as age 45, born in Alabama, occupation is housekeeper. Children listed with her are:

According to his military papers, Michael Guin enlisted on December 16, 1863 as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was in Company M, 1st Regiment Alabama Cavalry Volunteers. He died on March 22, 1864 of Small Pox at the General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He is buried in the Memphis National Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee, Section B, plot 1372.
Michael's military papers stated that he was 6 feet, 2 inches tall, blue eyes, dark hair, born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and his occupation was farmer.

LIZA HOWELL and MICHAEL GUIN:Michael and Eliza were married on December 4, 1853 in Fayette County, Alabama by Jack Rushing, Licensed Minister. The document to solemnize the marriage was issued December 1, 1853 by John C. Moore, Judge of Probate. The marriage took place in the home of G. Traweek (George Traweek was the brother in law of Eliza Howell Guin). The original document was lost during a courthouse fire and reissued by Probate Judge B.H. Williams on March 11, 1866 so that Eliza had it for her Widow's Relief Pension application.
